Mowers and Bee Gees lose 100% records

Two 100% records were ended in the latest round of matches in Wellington Ex-Services Skittles League.

The leaders of both the CB Championship and GT Championship, Mowers and Bell Green, were beaten by King Pins and Holywell Lake respectively.

Chris Bullock Championship

Home Guard IV 378 v Outsiders 358

Home Guard IV emerged victorious in this Conservative Club derby as they beat Outsiders by 20 pins on the upstairs alley. Dan Peters led the way for the home team with 57 while Ron Smith top scored for the Outsiders with 52. This result saw Outsiders drop to sixth while Home Guard IV climbed to fifth.

King Pins 389 v Mowers 383

King Pins ended stablemates Mowers’ unbeaten start to the season with a narrow six-pin win at the Football Club. The home side started strongly with a big 78 hand but found the going harder with the following two hands when they posted two low 60s. Mowers responded well and were just one pin down at the halfway stage. The second half saw the Pins again hit hands in the 60s, with Paul Winter finding some good form to hit 60 and leave Mowers three hands in the mid-60s to win – they fell just short despite a fine 55 from John Dodden. The result leaves both teams sharing second place in the table.

Nynehead Club 369 v All Stars 402

Leaders All Stars produced a stellar performance as they hit the highest score of the week to defeat Nynehead Club. Leading the way for the visitors was committee member Dan Rodger with 56. He was well supported by his team mates with another four players hitting scores in the 50s. Top man for the home side was Darren Davis with a staunch 55. Nynehead slip to second from bottom while All Stars move three points clear and set up a table-topping clash with King Pins in their next game.

Odds and Ends 384 v United Services 383

The closest match of the night saw Odds and Ends squeeze past visitors United Services on the downstairs alley of the Victoria Arms. The match was nip and tuck all the way and was in the balance right up to the last three balls of the game. Veterans Geoff Downs with 54 and Jeff Smith with 55 top scorers for Odds and Ends and United Services respectively. Odds and Ends move up to seventh while United Services slip to 11th.

WRFC 360 v Here 4 the Beer 333

Top scores of 52 apiece from Andy Thorne and Dave Pow helped see the rugby boys to a comfortable 27-pin win against Here 4 the Beer on the downstairs alley of the Conservative Club. The win moves WRFC up to tenth while defeat for the visitors sends them down to eighth place. Leading the way for the visitors was Will Brewer with a fine 59 but none of his team mates could match his scoring and found the going hard.

Gerald Thorne Championship

Bell Green 373 v Holywell Lake 383

Leaders Bell Green surrendered their 100% record as they went down by ten pins to Holywell Lake in the Victoria Arms derby. The home team were two pins to the good after four hands but disappointing fifth and sixth hands of 55 and 59 offered the visitors a chance to snatch victory, which they gratefully accepted as they hit a 60 and 66 to win by ten pins. Dave Howell with 57 was top scorer for the Lakers while Simon Rudd hit 55 to claim top score for the Bee Gees. This win pushes Holywell Lake up to fifth while Bell Green remain in top spot, a place they share with Rebels who have a game in hand.

Club Rockers 325 v OBA 316

Club Rockers eased to nine-pin win to claim their second victory of the season in a low scoring match at the Rockwell Green Institute. This leaves OBA with just the one win this season and they slip a place to 11th while Club Rockers share sixth place with Reservists and Oaks. Steve Lee was top scorer for Club Rockers with 48, Denver Clarke with 51 was the highest score for the visitors.

Fireguard A 350 v Report Centre A 329

Bottom side Report Centre A are still waiting for their first points of the season after their 21-pin defeat by Fireguard A at the Football club. Fireguard A are proving to a bit of a surprise package this season and currently share third spot with Cottage Pies just one point of off top spot. Ben Sellick hit 49 to claim highest score for the home side while Dan Parsons hit a commendable 55 for the visitors.

Oaks 338 v Reservists 381

Reservists romped to a 43-pin victory over Oaks on their new home alley at Nynehead Club. Reservists have started to climb the table, this win saw them move from 12th place to sixth, Oaks on the other hand drop a place to 11th. Reservists were in command from the off and were comfortable throughout. Josh Navarra hit a gutsy 52 for Oaks but it was in vain against the visitors whose top scorer was Neil Sparks with 53.

Relyon 353 v Queens Legs 368

In the Conservative Club derby, Relyon slumped to the visitors from upstairs as they went down by 15 pins. It was a closely fought encounter, and the result could have gone either way but it was Queens Legs who edged it with Marcus Watkins hitting a top score of 52 for the victors. Sean Buttle hit a fine 56 for the bedding boys on what is a notoriously difficult alley. Relyon drop a place to 12th, and Queens Legs leapfrog them into ninth place.

Shooters 366 v Hot Shots 338

Hot Shots are finding it difficult to reproduce their fine cup form in the league as they fell to their third league defeat of the season at the Football Club. This was Shooters’ first win of the season and they now share tenth place with their visitors and three other teams, Hot Shots had Richard Cox and Keith Harcombe top score for them with 50 apiece while Edd Chivers hit 53 to claim top score for the Hot Shots.
