Wellington Tennis Club is ready to start the new season with brand new training balls thanks to £50 vouchers received from Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership – and the season promises to be a very busy one.
WTC will field 3 teams in the summer league with Carl Puzey continuing to captain the A team in Division 2, Janet Dobson captaining the B team in Division 4 and Philippa Deem and Simon Cross sharing the captaincy of the C team.
Club Chairman Sue Rackley also plans a busy schedule for junior league players fielding 17U and 14U teams as well as hosting a Red/Orange tournament. These fixtures build on a winter programme of monthly matches for junior players of different ages played at home and at Trull, Wedmore and Woodland Tennis Clubs.
And there’s more tennis for everyone with the introduction of a new Sunday afternoon ‘mix-in’ from 4 pm. Sue said, “It’s aimed at attracting experienced players who don’t have time to play during the week. Players who are not members of the club can come along to ‘Pay and Play’ sessions for £5. These sessions are not for beginners but we hope to offer one for an ‘improvers’ on Tuesday evening soon.”

The club’s third court project is progressing with Taunton Deane Borough Council’s Head of Parks agreeing to move the football pitch to make room for an additional court. Sue said, “Councillors Andrew Govier and Janet Reed have been very supportive and, if we get planning permission, we aim to lease the Somerset County Council land next to us and apply for Section 106 and Viridor Community Fund money to pay for the project. We already have some funds pledged from Wellington Town Council and Somerset LTA.
“The extra court is needed to allow members continuous play on busy club nights. At present junior players are often restricted to half a court or the hitting wall as they wait to play. There’ll also be more court availability for the public and, hopefully, access for wheelchair players.”
The club has a website clubspark.lta.org.uk/WellingtonTennisClub and is active on Facebook as well.
