Wellesley Park Primary School’s girls’ football team are Somerset Under 11 County Champions.
In the Somerset County Finals played at Bridgwater College on Friday 13 January the team – Halle Watlin-Arnold, Ella Hartley, Bethan Chetland, Kenzie Norman, Charlotte Ayers, Tenika Goss, Emily Ayers and Grace Packman – played 7 matches, lost the first, drew the second and won the rest.
After full time in the final match, the score was still 0:0 and went into extra time but, when neither team scored, it then went to penalties. Goalie Bethan Chetland made important saves and three Wellesley Park players scored.
Emily Ayers and Grace Packman said, “We were so delighted to lift up the trophy and wear our medals.”
Wellesley Park’s Head Sian Evans said, “What a terrific result! Everyone at WP is very proud of the girls. What a fabulous achievement! Very many thanks to the school staff for all their coaching and to coach Mr Foster for all his support and effort.”
Mr Foster added, “I’m so proud of the Year 6 girls for becoming the Under 11 Champions of Somerset. They showed fantastic, team work, skills and determination throughout. After losing their first game, the girls came back to remain unbeaten for the rest of the Tournament. Nerves well and truly kicked in for all of us as the Final went to a penalty shootout. Incredibly, they held their nerve and won to become the Champions. Thanks to all the girls for their efforts and to the parents for braving the extremely cold weather on the day.”
