The Wellesley’s programme of LIVE events in March opens on Tuesday 3 March at 7.30pm with the transmission of the Riverdance 25th Anniversary Show.
The new 25th anniversary production was filmed live in Dublin’s 3Arena where Riverdance first ‘changed the face of Irish fancing for ever’. This is a reinvention of the first show with its Grammy Award-winning music and the energy and passion of its Irish and international dance.
To celebrate 25 years of enduring popularity, the show’s composer, Bill Whelan, has re-recorded his award-winning soundtrack, and producer Moya Doherty and director John McColgan have updated the show with new lighting, projection, stage and costume designs.
The Royal Opera House production of Beethoven’s opera Fidelio is broadcast live on Tuesday 17 March at 7.15pm.
Beethoven’s only opera is regarded as a masterpiece, a story of ‘risk and triumph’. In this new production, conducted by Antonio Pappano, Jonas Kaufmann plays the political prisoner Florestan, and Lise Davidsen his wife Leonore (disguised as Fidelio) who daringly sets out to rescue him.
The opera premiered in London on 1 March and, whilst critics have questioned the staging, the two principals have earned unanimous praise. Kaufmann ‘sings with eloquent nobility’ and the Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen is ‘astonishing’ in the title role. Her performance ‘justifies the price of any ticket and is nothing short of sublime’.
On Saturday 28 March The Wellesley is screening a live transmission of the Michael Ball and Alfie Boe: Back Together show at 7.30pm.
Following their star turns in the West End’s phenomenally successful staged concert of Les Misérables, Ball and Boe have reunited to tour their third album Back Together following the number one best-selling hits Together and Together Again.
The superstar pair will take on their favourite musical theatre, pop and rock tracks, including songs from The Lion King, The Greatest Showman, Aspects of Love and The Phantom of the Opera as well as a Queen Medley – 20 songs in the 2 hour concert all showcasing their renowned voices and on-stage chemistry.
This live transmission will be repeated at The Wellesley on Sunday 26 April at 2.30pm
