Susan continues as WI President

Susan Bellringer has been re-elected as President of Sampford Arundel WI and received a thank you plant for her commitment to the branch.

At the monthly meeting, Susan gave a report of the recent National Federation of Wis’ AGM at the Royal Albert Hall, where she was the link delegate.

She said it was an amazing day, starting with the 5,000 WI members singing Jerusalem.

Ann Jones, the NFWI Chair, thanked members for their optimism and said there was so much to celebrate and be grateful for.

The resolution ‘Dental Health Matters ‘ was proposed and debated with the proposer concerned about the lack of NHS dentists and the resulting health issues. The vote the result was ‘for’ 4578 and ‘against’ 214.

All of the guest speakers were talking on the theme of ‘No more violence against women and girls’ and Susan said they were incredible.

At the monthly meeting, the speaker was Mark Baker from the Grand Western Canal and Nature Reserve.

The canal was opened in the 1800s and was used mainly to transport limestone. It is now used recreationally for fishing, boating and walking along the 11 miles of the towpath.

The competition for ‘any item made from lace’ was won by Rosemary.

The meeting finished with a quiz about flowers and plants, organised by Christine and Julie and won by the team called Busy Bees.

Sampford Arundel WI’s next meeting will be on July 9th at the Beambridge Inn (7.30pm) and the speaker is Roger Nunn from Wellington Twinning Association.

If anyone would like to join the WI, they will made very welcome or can contact Heather Cook on 01823 666439.
