Initial discussions are taking place on the possible construction of around 250 new homes on the edge of Wellington.
The site in question is to the north of the main road into town – opposite Lidl and running down towards Poole Industrial Estate.
Carden Group Plc instructed planners Boyle & Summers to prepare a ‘Vision document’ to support the promotion of approximately 12.1 hectares of land as part of the Wellington Place Plan consultation.
The document says the ‘Vision’ involves ”a new, sustainable neighbourhood of around 257-293 new homes at land to the north of Taunton Road, integrated with the existing market town, complementing Wellington’s character and landscape setting, and having a well-rounded sense of identity and community.
“The new neighbourhood will benefit from generous green open spaces connecting to the surrounding countryside, footpath network and well managed waterways. “These will provide rich and diverse habitats and valuable community, leisure and recreational spaces.”
Martyn Twigg, Director of Planning with Carden Group, confirmed the company was working with Somerset Council about the development of the land.
“The council’s planning department has contacted adjacent landowners and businesses on our behalf to help understand the issues that development of the land may raise.
“We will also be talking to parish, town and Somerset councillors.”

Backing onto the landfill and tip? Really?
We don’t need more houses, we need dentists,schools,hospitals, repaired roads etc etc etc.
The infrastructure as it stands can’t cope and if you need proof of that go to A&E or phone for an ambulance or try and get a dentist, doctors appointment or school placement.
If we have more houses we MUST have a plan to provide infrastructure to cope with the new residents. Wellington IS a commuter town already. Supermarket needed at Western ebnd of town to prevent travelling eastwards to 3 supermarkets through town. Equally a NEW medical centre at the Eastern end of town to cater for large developments here and at Orchard Grove. Secondary school??????
