Tangerines hit for six by Tavistock

Jewson Western League premier division: Tavistock 6, Wellington 0

Wellington AFC endured another difficult evening as their tough run of games continued with a long trip to Tavistock.

It was their fourth match in 11 days – all against sides in the top six of the division.

The Tangerines, whose squad included six U18s, were competitive throughout the first half but were swept aside after the break.

Tavistock enjoyed the majority of possession during the opening stages, although Wellington remained organised defensively and restricted the hosts to relatively few clearcut opportunities.

After Ben Evett had been denied by the home keeper, the hosts broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute.

A move down the right flank ended with a ball played across the face of goal, allowing Rhys Lindsell to finish from close range at the back post.

Wellington responded positively and almost found an equaliser shortly afterwards. Evett found space on the edge of the penalty area, turned and struck a left-footed effort, only for the keeper to produce an excellent save.

The game was in the balance at half-time but Tavistock took control immediately after the restart.

They doubled their advantage in the 46th minute when Tallan Burns struck from distance, sending his effort past Wellington keeper Luke Vernon.

Tavistock extended their lead five minutes later as Vernon saved but the loose ball fell to Kenley Dyson on the edge of the penalty area and the midfielder curled his effort in off the right-hand post.

The hosts continued to create opportunities and added a fourth in the 59th minute. A long ball found Luke Forward, who waited for Vernon to commit himself before calmly slotting the ball into the net.

Wellington did create an opportunity in the 65th minute when the ball fell to substitute Danny Wordsworth just inside the penalty area and his shot went wide of the left-hand post.

But their task became even more difficult in the 71st minute as Evett received a second yellow card, leaving the visitors to complete the remainder of the match with ten men.

The home side made it 5–0 nine minutes from time when Forward capitalised on a misplaced Wellington pass around 30 yards from goal. The striker worked his way into the penalty area, rounded Vernon and rolled the ball into an empty net for his second goal of the evening.

They then completed the scoring in the 89th minute with substitute Oliver Cleeve adding a sixth to round off a convincing victory.

The Tangerines will now look to regroup ahead of their return to the Carly Press Ground on Saturday when they welcome Torpoint Athletic for a 3pm kick-off.

Wellington: Luke Vernon, Luke Perry, Reegan Scotcher, Jack Lewis, Tom Hawkings, Isaac Baker, Lewis Oaten, Max Edgecombe, Daniel Conway, Ben Evett, Elijah Hiller. Substitutes: Danny Wordsworth, Freddie Jarman, Gustavs Andins, Linkoln Nash (all used).
