Thursday’s election for a new town councillor for Wellington East is a straight three-way contest between Conservative, Labour and Lib-Dem candidates.
Andrew Sully, the Conservative candidate, has lived in Wellington for 25 years and runs his own business in the town. “I believe the Town Council shouldn’t be about party politics but common sense ideas that are good for Wellington as a whole,” he says in a letter to voters.
Jill Mitton, the Labour candidate, has lived in Wellington for 30 years and is secretary of the Community Association and Food Town volunteer co-ordinator. “I feel I would like to give more back to the town that I love by representing Wellington East on the town council,” she writes.
Mark Lithgow, the Lib-Dem candidate, is another long-standing Wellington resident, with 30 years to his name and a strong resistance to further housing near Cades Farm. “There are far better and more suitable sites for these houses in Taunton,” he said.
The two polling stations at The Old Vicarage and Wellesley Park primary school open from 7am until 10pm.
