Wellington mum Vickie Harrison successful completed the London Marathon yesterday (Sunday) and raised more than £3,500 for charity in the process.
Vickie, who runs Bluebell Gems, turned herself into a ‘human maypole’ for the occasion.
As part of her fundraising for Marie Curie, she sold ribbons for people to write messages before they were all turned into a skirt which Vickie wore for the whole 26.2 miles.
She told Around Wellington: “It was an amazing day.
“I loved every second of it, the sun was shining down on London and the crowds were just spectacular with people shouting encouragement all the way.
“Children were giving high fives to the runners, people were handing out sweets, oranges and drinks and I even got a Mr Whippy ice cream at mile 22!
“There was every type of music playing, lots of different bands and even people playing the bagpipes.
“It was wonderful to see all the costumes – I was overtaken by someone in a full rhino costume at one point which was impressive in the heat!
I had to stop and get my knee strapped up at the First Aid tent at 12 miles by the wonderful volunteers from St John’s Ambulance team and then had a bit of trouble with my hip so a lot of the route was walked.
“But the last seven miles I ran all the way to the end and what a relief to turn the corner by Buckingham Palace and see the finish line on the Mall!
It was a amazing experience I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
