Only two years after opening its Wellington branch the oh-so-posh supermarket Waitrose is planning to extend its car-park. The company has purchased some land behind neighbouring shops and plans to tear up a small patch of existing grass to make 15 new car spaces.
But not all of its customers can see the point of the expansion. “I come here about once a week but only to buy treats, as it’s so expensive,” said Amanda Blanden from Bishops Lydeard as she loaded shopping into her car. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen the car park completely full, except perhaps at Christmas.”
Rumours that Waitrose is planning to use the extra space to create a VIP car park area with large bays, reserved exclusively for the 4WDs favoured by many customers, remain unconfirmed. “I certainly hope it’s true,” said one Yummy Mummy, struggling to squeeze her Range Rover into a space just right for a Golf.
Am genuinely surprised that anyone has found Waitrose car park full only rarely. As a frequent shopper there I am regularly frustrated by the lack of spaces. Good for Waitrose for expanding its site!
