Waitrose suffered another blow when a customer’s out-of-control Honda CRV crashed into the store’s café. Glass shattered and a brick pillar was seriously damaged.
Two passengers were taken to Musgrove Hospital and one was treated at the scene by paramedics. No one in the Waitrose café was injured.
The accident happened in heavy rain when the car failed to negotiate a sharp right-turn into the shop’s car park.
Builders were quickly on the scene to shore up the shattered brickwork. It is only just over a month since Waitrose fully re-opened after last summer’s £1m arson attack.
Chris Reynard, branch manager at Waitrose Wellington, said: “Our thoughts are with the driver who we wish a quick recovery. We’d also like to thank the emergency services for their swift response.
“The shop remains open but as a precaution we have temporarily closed the cafe while we await the attendance of a structural engineer.”
