Wellington are up to fourth in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier League courtesy of this excellent home win over Street last Saturday as they saw off one of the sides who were promoted with them at the end of last season by some 82 runs and so collected 20 points for their efforts.
Choosing to bat on winning the toss saw Tom Chambers and Neil Hendy post an outstanding opening stand of 123 as Chambers hit 77 in 79 balls with fourteen fours and Hendy hit a capital 94 in 146 balls with fourteen fours too and a six to boot.
Run scoring at a good rate continued as Wellington batted into the fiftieth and final over of their innings with Jack Beal striking 19 as the Red and Blacks totalled 249 in 49.4 overs with Evely’s 4-53 in 9.4 overs been Street’s best offering with the ball.
Luke Desave was exemplary in taking 4-33 in ten overs and this put Street under pressure from the off as they fell to 42-4.
Wood with 34 and Peters with 30 each made a start, but did not go on with it to the extent that was needed as Rob Moysey’s wrist spin and Arron Campbell’s finger spin saw twenty overs delivered between them for a combined cost of just 42 runs.
This was accuracy personified.
Jack Beal with 3-28 in seven overs came back for a second spell and along with Lewis Sparks saw off the Street innings for 157 with four overs going unused.
This was a third win in a row for a side who are in confident mood in both forms of the game in which they are involved at the moment.
Wellington 2nd XI 103 Street 2nd XI 105-1
Wellington 2nd XI are in eighth position in Division Five of the Somerset League after this nine wicket defeat away to Street 2nd XI last Saturday when a promising start was not developed.
Callum Hendy and Nathan Roberts added 22 first up for Wellington’s second string on their winning the toss and deciding to bat first before Hendy was out for 14.
Roberts continued to 21 and Ryan Adams, in charge on the day, made 14 as well as the score reached 54-1.
However from that point only Macaulay Campbell with 13 made it to double figures as Wellington were all out for 105 in 32.4 overs with Wall’s 4-16 in 7.4 overs been of good quality.
In their reply Street were rapid in chasing down the total they needed as Holland hit 36no, Hodges 29 and Miller 24no with Sam Wooster been the successful bowler for Wellington.
Wellington 3rd XI 88 Ilminster 3rd XI 89-4
A slow and low pitch saw a low scoring game in Division Seven South of the Somerset League at Ilminster last Saturday when Wellington 3rd XI did not make the runs they would have liked, but they did keep the hosts chase going into the last ten overs as they fought back well in the field.
After been put into bat Wellington found themselves at 6-2, but Andy Hurry, who top scored with 29, and Jacob Hurry went about a good third wicket stand that was ended when Jacob was out caught for 11.
Skipper Des Campbell with 12 made runs in the middle order and at 54-3 if the Red and Blacks third string could get another hundred runs then they would have a really competitive total on a track that was not easy to bat on at all.
However a total score of 88 was realised as Langridge with 3-13 in seven overs and A.Horne with 2-8 in six overs saw Wellington were out with five overs going unused although Dave Luxton was resolute in making 10no at the end.
Wellington went with spin and seam when it came to their turn to bowl and Alex Derbridge bowled his off spin well as did Tyler Fyfe when it came to his left arm seam.
Des Campbell bowled well to take 2-20 in eight overs as he found himself on a hat-trick and when Ilminster dipped from 40-0 to 46-4 Wellington had a glimmer of hope, but home team captain Warry carried his bat for 35no and A.Horne completed a good game with 22no to see the hosts home by six wickets.
Wellington 113-9 North Petherton 114-8
This was as close a Baker Cup Quarter Final as you could have seen as Wellington were edged out by fellow West of England Premier League Somerset Division side North Petherton at home last Monday evening as the Red and Blacks lost by two wickets with a ball to spare.
Choosing to bat on winning the toss saw Wellington get 21 on the board through Ben Evett and Sam Whitefield, but two wickets in two balls from Gregory put paid to this good start, but Evett and skipper Arron Campbell with 37 and 22 respectively took the game back in Wellington’s favour as both played well.
Luke Desave with 22 made good middle order runs, but the innings did not quite realise the total desired, but Rob Moysey, Lewis Sparks and Macaulay Campbell scrambled some good late runs to see that Petherton would need 114 to win.
Wellington had two wickets to their credit by the time the score had hit double figures as Arron Campbell and Luke Desave struck and at 44-4 and then 54-5 the game was well balanced, but a fine attacking knock of 33 from Knight and 17 from Lambert got Petherton into the 90s and they were on course.
Wellington still came back and claimed wickets six, seven and eight as Sam Whitefield, Will Derrick, Luke Desave and Arron Campbell all tasted success with the ball and the last over came to pass with three needed and two wickets in hand and it went to the fifth ball of six, but Petherton got what they needed down to third man and had won a pulsating game and will play Ilminster, of WEPL’s Premier Two Bristol and Somerset Division, at Taunton CC in the Semi Finals.
