Wellington Flower Show, which has been part of our town’s calendar since 1856, could become “a thing of the past” unless more helpers come forward.
A statement issued by the show society today (Tuesday) said the small committee which runs it was looking for fresh ideas and new members.
“At our recent AGM, the chairman stepped down from the role, having done it for the past 12 years, and unfortunately no one was willing to take over.
“This means that there is a real risk of the society having to close and the shows becoming a thing of the past.
“We desperately want to avoid this happening, as they have been enjoyed by so many for such a long time.
“The flower show is not alone in finding itself in such a situation and although our finances are in good health, we lack people who are willing to commit to help run the show, particularly on the day itself.
“We are, therefore, appealing for people to join us to keep the shows going, next year and in the future.
“We have a variety of roles available, from setup, catering and decorations to visitor assistance, judging support, and more.
”Committee positions are also open for those who wish to take on a more active role and help shape the future of the shows from the planning stages to end product.
“Your time, whether a few hours or a longer commitment, will make a genuine difference.”
