Wellington Football Club held on as leaders of Toolstation Divison 1 Western despite a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Devizes Town. Although the Tangerines dropped two points they retained top spot due to the two chasing teams – Keynsham Town and Cheddar – both failing to capitalise. Keynsham lost 0-2 at home to 15th placed Westbury United and Cheddar could only draw 1-1 away at 20th placed Calne Town.
In a closely-fought match both Wellington and Devizes created chances and the teams looked evenly balanced but shots off target and one or two fine saves – particularly by the Devizes goalkeeper in the 2nd half – kept the score level.
Wellington were the marginally more impressive team in the second half, mounting strong attacks down the left wing in particular, but chances weren’t taken as shots were sprayed over the bar. Devizes’ defence was solid and their midfield kept the game in the balance until the final whistle.
An unfortunate goalmouth clash almost on full time resulted in a Wellington player being stretchered off and later taken to hospital.
Wellington now have 64 points having played 29 games; Keynsham Town are still in 2nd place with 62 points having played 30 games and Cheddar have 61 points after the same number of games as Wellington. Next week’s home fixture against Cheddar could be crucial to the Tangerines’ promotion prospects and strong support from local fans would be welcomed.
