Back in 1936, a group of like-minded women came together to form West Buckland Women’s Institute.
Ninety years later, the group is still going strong and is marking its milestone anniversary with a series of celebrations, the latest being an afternoon tea which took place in the village hall on Tuesday.
In true WI style, the hall was decorated with banners and bunting, and around 30 ladies dressed in their best, enjoyed cakes and sandwiches.
Treasurer Carole had also made and iced a beautiful cake decorated with the WI logo.
The event was also attended by Shirley Routley, Somerset WI Federation Chair, and guests from the Tone Valley group of WIs.
West Buckland President, Christine Wombwell, welcomed members and guests and spoke about the friendship enjoyed by members over nine decades.
Celebrations continue on Saturday, August 22nd, when the WI hosts an open day coffee morning, starting at 10am in the village hall.
This will include a display of photographs and memorabilia from the group’s archives.
There will also be an opportunity to see the many groups and activities available to West Buckland WI members including kurling, handicrafts, a walking group, book club, board games, a lunch club and coffee mornings.
President Christine said: “The WI has so much to offer and we would love to tell more people about it. So please call in and see us for a coffee and a chat. “
New members are always welcome. If you would like to visit or join West Buckland WI, please contact Christine Wombwell on 01823 652863 or 0773 6712273 or email westbuckland@somerset.wi.org.uk
