Transition Town Wellington had a busy April – and May looks to be even busier with community gardening sessions already programmed to cover all the sites around the town.
Here’s the environmental group’s latest update:
April certainly didn’t start with showers but an extended period of sunny weather, which meant we had a lovely time during our gardening sessions!
Three sessions were spent weeding a big patch of the herb area in Fox’s Field and adding some wood chip paths for access.
Then we had two planting days to add herbs and flowers to the new area in the forest garden, courtesy of the grant from Blackdown Garden Centre, as the weather turned to water in the new plants. Then we got some help from the team at Blackdown Garden Centre with mulching at the end of the month.
With extra sessions at Fox’s Field, the other sites were in no way forgotten; a bramble clearing session at Trinity Orchard and scything at Linden Meadow made sure the trees we’ve planted grow well, and two sessions at Longacre to scythe at the back of neighbours’ houses before Easter and the fruit bushes prepped for picking, with students from the Bath Spa University coming to make a short film about us!
There’s still a lot to do in May as everything is growing, so we’d love some extra help if you can. Everyone is welcome to help, no prior experience needed. The main job at Fox’s Field will be to weed the herb area and add wood chip paths.
If you’d like to try your hand at scything, May is a great time do this as the fresh growth of grass and weeds cuts easily.
