Dementia charity providing a taste of the great outdoors

Local dementia charity Reminiscence Learning has launched a Memorable Adventures Project (MAP) to get people with dementia, and their families and carers, out into some of the most beautiful natural spaces in the South West.

It has created the project as a response to a growing need for people in Somerset who are living with dementia and their carers to access the outdoors as a means of increasing well being and reducing isolation and loneliness.

The charity says: “Each week, experienced facilitators and volunteers guide small groups in a variety of different locations and landscapes including canals, coastal, forest and countryside.

“Most recently we have visited the Grand Western Canal at Tiverton and Fyne Court on the Quantock Hills which have both been very positive and participants reflected on how much they enjoyed the experience of walking with people in a similar situation.

“By creating a community of like minded people, the hope is that MAP can reduce feelings of isolation and despair, improve overall mental and physical health and create a space where people feel valued and have a sense of belonging.

“The benefits of spending time in the outdoors are well known and Memorable Adventures Project aims to give people living with the dementia and their carers the opportunity to continue accessing this incredible resource at a time when other aspects of life can feel overwhelming and difficult.

“Future walks will include locations such as Tarr Steps on Exmoor, Haldon Forest near Exeter and Steart Marshes in Somerset.

“The group meet every Thursday at 9.30am at the Wellington Community Hospital and aim to return by around 3pm.

“Places cost £50 (including refreshments) for a client with memory loss/ dementia, carers go free, and clients can go on their own although spaces are limited so booking is essential.

“Please contact Reminiscence Learning on 01823 668676 to speak to our friendly team and book your space.”
