There’s a new man at the helm of Around Wellington.
Ken Bird, former Editor of the Somerset County Gazette, has taken over from Keith Wheatley who has decided to concentrate on his work as a local councillor along with his other interests.
Keith launched this site nine years ago and it now attracts more than 10,000 views a month.
Ken said: “I was proud to be asked to take on the site by Keith and build on the great work he has put in, assisted by Gill Paltridge.
“I’m also delighted that Gill is going to carry on covering the arts, sport and other events.
“Wellington has been my home for more than half-a-century and I’m looking forward to promoting its wonderful community spirit.”
Ken moved to Wellington aged eight when his parents, John and Wendy, took over the Sanford Arms in South Street.
He went to Beech Grove School and then Wellington School before joining the Wellington Weekly News as a trainee reporter in 1976.
Ken moved to the Gazette in 1980 and remained with the company for more than 30 years, the final ten of which were as Editor-in-Chief of the Gazette, its sister titles and websites.
For the past ten years he has worked in communications at two local independent schools – Taunton and, until earlier this month, Queen’s College.
Ken has been involved in Wellington Football Club since he was a boy, including ten years as Chairman, and is currently its Social Media and Website Officer.
He was also Chairman of Wellington Ex-Services Skittles League for ten years.
