Wellington’s new town council meets this week for the first time since the elections on May 15th. There are a number of new faces such as Charles Biscoe, John Thorne and Marcus Barr on the 15-strong body, plus the return of Gary James who was a town councillor until 2006.
Conservatives now have a firm majority on the council, with both Labour and Lib Dems losing councillors in the election. However, it is rare at council meetings for debate and votes to divide along party lines.
The town council has an annual budget of over £100,000 per year but its responsibilities are gradually increasing in line with income; for instance the three public toilets in Wellington become a WTC responsibility from this financial year and there is a possibility that parks and playing field maintenance will also move from TDBC.
