Outstanding summer for tennis club

Wellington Tennis Club are celebrating their best competitive season in recent years in the West Somerset Tennis League.

In division one, Wellington A finished second behind Trull A and ahead of Bridgwater A, Taunton and Trull B.

Players were Liz Deem, Sue Rackley, Yaz Cannell, James Cross, Connor Sellick and Kevin Jones.  They were the only team to take four sets off Trull A in a match.

Last year, the B team had to win a play-off to remain in division three – this season they finished in third place.

Players were Margaret Staker, Aly Spiller, Amelia, David Norkett, Sam Ogilvie, Greg Sellers, David Goldsack and Liam Richards.

The men’s team won all their matches and gained promotion to division one.

The competitive play will continue with in-house singles and mixed doubles box leagues which has been organised by Yaz Cannell and Liam Richards.

The club have also entered a mixed team in the North Somerset Tennis League for the winter season.

The club are hoping to inspire its junior players and will be working with the coach to ensure all children are offered more matchplay opportunities, whether in-house or LTA tournaments.

Chair Sue Rackley said: “With strong competition from padel and pickleball, we need to help coach young tennis players to keep playing tennis.

“They are the future for tennis clubs.”
