Transition Town Wellington has outlined the progress made by volunteers – including pupils at Court Fields School – in June to the community gardens at Fox’s Field, Longacre and Linden Meadow.
TTW said: “June has seen a lot of progress with the herb area in Fox’s Field almost completed and all the plants growing well, plus the paths between trees in the rest of the forest garden starting to be cut.
“A beautiful woven backed willow bench has been made by Stephan Jennings with help from children from Courtfields.
“At Longacre, paths have been mown and fruit bushes cleared around, and we’ve removed the storage we used to keep the hay in.
“The new trees in Linden Meadow have all been mown around and we’ve been very grateful of the rain that fell around the 20th June. We’ve filled two IBC tanks with water, with the help of Colin Southcott to move them in place at the top of the hill.
Transition Town Wellington has issued the programme of community gardening activities at various sites around the town throughout July.
The schedule is as follows:

- Thursday 6th July at 9am @ Fox’s Field
- Monday 10th July at 9am @ Longacre
- Wednesday 12th July at 9am @ Fox’s Field
- Wednesday 19th July at 9am @ Fox’s Field
- Thursday 20th July at 9am @ Fox’s Field
- Tuesday 25th July at 9am @ Fox’s Field
Everyone is welcome to help. There’s no need to book and no prior experience is needed. You are advised to wear suitable shoes and wear gardening gloves, and if it’s a watering session please bring a watering can if you have one.

On Sunday, 23rd July, there will be a Family Picnic at Fox’s Field from 11am-3pm.
TTW said: “After the success of the picnic event here last year, we are repeating it with a slight change: there will not be scythers this time, but we will be doing a bioblitz on iNaturalist, joining in with the wider citizen survey project with the Somerset Wildlife Trust and the Somerset Environmental Records Centre.
“Join us to sharpen your identification and recording skills. It’s freeto all and a great way to explore Fox’s Field up close! We will look for and record as many different creatures as possible, everything from birds, bees, flowers, butterflies, beetles and bugs.
“We hope that as our maintenance of Fox’s Field provides more and more habitat for wildlife, we will see an increase year on year of the species found. There will also be music, cake for sale and a talk about the forest garden with a guided tour, including harvesting any fruit or vegetables growing at the time.
“Please bring a picnic and a rug and just enjoy the space! No need to book, and everyone welcome!
