Tangerines well beaten in premier cup

Somerset Premier Cup second round: Weston-super-Mare 8, Wellington 0

Wellington AFC bowed out of the premier cup at Weston last night (Tuesday) as the National League South side recorded a convincing victory.

The hosts, who play three divisions above the Tangerines, fielded a mix of first teamers and academy players at their Optima Stadium.

Wellington held firm for the first 20 minutes but it was one of Weston’s regulars who broke the deadlock.

Will Dawes gave keeper Luke Vernon no chance with a superbly struck free-kick and doubled the lead seven minutes later, cutting inside from the right before driving the ball inside the far post.

Leighton Green added the third in the 32nd minute, squeezing the ball home after Weston broke forward. He struck again seven minutes later, tapping in a cross from close range to make it 4-0 at half-time.

Dawes completed his hat-trick six minutes after the restart with a sweetly struck drive from 30 yards.

A fine double block on the line denied Weston a sixth before Vernon, who impressed throughout, pulled off another sharp save.

The hosts went further ahead in the 66th minute when James Watts ran on to a ball over the top and finished clinically. Theo Evans then made it seven, converting a cross from the right.

Wellington’s best effort came in the 84th minute when Ben Evett’s fierce drive drew a fine save and, four minutes later, Weston substitute Freddie Pegler was sent off for pulling back Josh Baker after he had been played in out wide.

Harry Logan completed the scoring in the 90th minute, volleying home a cross from the right just before the final whistle.

The Tangerines return to Jewson Western League action on Saturday when Ivybridge Town visit the Carly Press Ground.
