Jewson Western League premier division: Liskeard Athletic 4, Wellington 0
Two goals in each half consigned battling Wellington AFC to defeat in Cornwall yesterday (Saturday).
It was another tough afternoon for the Tangerines who were playing their third game in eight days against a side from the top five.
The home side enjoyed the better of the attacking opportunities throughout the contest, although Wellington worked hard defensively, with Jack Lewis making several important interventions and goalkeeper Luke Vernon producing a string of fine saves, including a penalty.
The visitors were forced into an early reshuffle when defender Connor Pengelly suffered an injury after only 13 minutes.
U18s player Freddie Jarman came on in his place, taking up the right-back position with Harry Chetland moving into central defence.
The visitors survived a scare midway through the first half when the referee awarded Liskeard a penalty following a challenge by Vernon on a home striker but the keeper made amends by producing a superb stop from Jack Crago’s spot kick to keep the scores level. CLICK HERE.
Wellington almost made the most of that reprieve immediately afterwards, breaking forward at the other end where Lewis Oaten forced Liskeard goalkeeper Ollie Chenoweth into a smart save.
However, the breakthrough arrived for the hosts five minutes later when George Marris latched on to another long ball over the top and slotted past Vernon to give them lead.
Things quickly became more difficult for Wellington as Liskeard doubled their advantage just two minutes later. A move down the left ended with the ball being played across the penalty area where Crago finished into the top corner.
After the break, more Liskeard pressure eventually told in the 52nd minute when a ball pulled back across the box found Kai Gilbert, who drove his effort into the net to extend their advantage.
Wellington continued to work hard defensively but the hosts added a fourth after 65 minutes. Lewis initially produced a goal-line clearance, but the loose ball fell to Lorenz who fired home.
The Tangerines will now look to regroup quickly as they prepare for another away fixture against Tavistock on Tuesday evening.
